We will introduce a zero waste strategy. Liberal Democrats set up the twin bin collection scheme and will now seek to minimise waste through recycling of trade waste, weekly compostable collections and by putting a greater emphasis on re-use schemes.

We will:

bullet

Significantly reduce the volume of waste going to landfill.

bullet

Introduce, at the earliest opportunity, a third household bin for the disposal of compostable waste.

bullet

Work creatively with town and parish councils to generate village compost schemes and develop more and better local recycling facilities.

bullet

Increase the range of plastics and other materials (e.g. Tetrapaks) that can be recycled.

bullet

Provide more and better information to residents about how to reduce waste and about what can/cannot be recycled.

bullet

Lobby supermarkets and other stores to reduce packaging.

bullet

Expand the trade waste service and trade waste recycling opportunities.

bullet

Ensure that the Mid Suffolk District Council leads by example by adopting rigorous year-on-year targets for achieving zero waste in its offices.

bullet

Involve people of all ages in the zero waste target plan, providing grants to parish councils and organisations to work dynamically and inspirationally with the Council on relevant projects.

Liberal Democrats, working for you not just at election time.
