Recycling of Waste Electronic Equipment: The WEE directive

It is essential to recover the materials in waste electronic equipment.  New rules come into force next month which is a step in the right direction.  However we must be alert to the problems of recycling by shipping everything to China.  This article gives a stark picture of the realities that we must avoid.

Waste Transfer Facility at the Debtrac Centre in Needham Market:  Not Approved

Today (12 April) S Sacker (Claydon) Ltd applied to the County Council for planning permission for a Waste Transfer Facility Building at the Debtrac Centre on the B1113 Ipswich Road in Needham Market opposite Lion Barn estate.  This would include construction of a Waste Transfer Facility Building, including control cabin, car and lorry park and skip storage areas.

Liberal Democrats are concerned about HGV traffic this would generate in Needham Market and Great Blakenham.

Cllr Julia Truelove, Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Bosmere division and Cllr John Field, Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Gipping Valley, today made local views known at the County's Development Control Committee.  Councillors responded to this input and their own concerns on planning issues.  The application was not approved and the decision delayed pending completion of a survey of HGV traffic in the area and a site visit.

Speaking after the Development Control meeting, Cllr Julia Truelove said, "This is a very difficult situation; I appreciate the need for facilities like this in order to keep recycling rates high and improve them further, keeping down the cost to the public purse, but I am still concerned about the impact extra HGV traffic through Needham Market will have wherever it comes from.

This is an area of historic and aesthetic importance being a conservation area containing 82 listed buildings.   The lives of those living along the road are being put under strain by the increase in traffic and noise pollution.  I will be monitoring this situation very closely and will expect the County Council to as well."

Cllr John Field added, "We all understand the need for waste facilities, but this is simply not the site to place one.  If HGV's are sent the other way out of Needham Market they will have to come through Great Blakenham, another area suffering from these problems.  I am pleased that this whole application has been looked at in the round and a sensible decision made."
